When I lived in my house overlooking the sea in Newquay I watched surfers everyday. On Fistral, (the U.K.'s most famous surfing beach), there are always surfers around trying to catch the best waves - the atmosphere is very inspiring. Above are a few new paintings, my starting point was to take lots of photos of surfers which is my way of taking notes - snapshots, like quick sketches.
Painting surfers is an ongoing project, a bit of an obsession perhaps. I like the idea of playing about with the paint - thin washes mixed with thick areas. And experimenting with ideas such as big skies and low horizons, drawing in the surfboards and then obliterating them with white spray. I adore the ever-changing light of the morning and evening over the coastline, with surfer silhouettes giving tension and focus to the scene.
